Hong islands can be reached in 20 minutes by speed boat or 45 minutes by long tail boat. You can reach the island group from the beaches surrounding Krabi or from Phuket. If you are leaving from Krabi , as we did, there is a small window to buy tickets to the surrounding islands .
It is no wonder that many people consider it one of the most beautiful islands in the region. I hate to say it, but I found Hong Island even more gorgeous (and less crowded) than the very popular Maya Bay. The water around the island is crystal clear and perfect for snorkeling and swimming.
Safety in Krabi and Phi Phi. Krabi Province is a safe place for extensive travel. However, like many popular tourist spots, there are random pickpockets in action, although Krabi has a much lower crime rate than Phuket or Bangkok. Problems can be avoided by acting sensibly and exercising caution at all times.
Best area to stay in Krabi Ao Nang: probably the most popular place in the Krabi area. Railay & Tonsai Beach: the remote area of Krabi , reachable only by boat. Nopparat Thara & Klong Haeng: a long shallow beach, very quiet, a perfect spot for a family holiday with kids or just a peaceful stay with a few sunset walks.
To reach Ao Nang or Hong Island it’s best to travel via Krabi. With this option you can fly to the Krabi International Airport which is connected to locations in Thailand as well as e.g. Kuala Lumpur or Qatar. More information about flights, departure times and prices can be found on Skyscanner.
Not advisable to make the trip from Ao Nang, or Krabi Mainland to Ko Phi Phi during the low season of May – Oct due to possible rough seas and weather conditions. Strong sea currents can also prevent boats from entering Maya Bay. 4 island is a better trip although best done as a sunset tour .

A two metre crocodile has been caught in a mangrove forest in Klongtom, Krabi whilst another crocodile was sighted last night. Officials from the Krabi Provincial Fisheries Office arrived at the area after being notified by locals that a crocodile has been caught.
Still, these warnings are just for hypothetical situations, since you probably won’t get in any kind of trouble in Krabi : except for stealing and petty crimes on the beaches and mainly after dark, there aren’t many criminal activities in this part of Thailand.
Koh Samui is one of the most expensive destinations in Thailand, and is ideal if you have a higher budget and your trip falls between January and August. If you have a standard budget and are going between November and April, Krabi is a better bet.
Krabi Town is a good base for doing day trips to cool spots in that area, but I wouldn’t recommend it for a honeymoon. And if you want a beach location then I would probably recommend Railay Beach over Ao Nang .
