Koh Phi Phi is one of the most expensive islands in Thailand, especially for budget accommodation. Even a bed in an 18-bed dorm room can cost you upwards of 1000 baht per night ($33).
The Phi Phi Islands (Thai: หมู่เกาะพีพี , (pronounced ‘Pee Pee’) are an island group in Thailand between the large island of Phuket and the Straits of Malacca coast of Thailand. The islands are administratively part of Krabi Province.
Phi Phi’s very overrated and overcrowded. But it’s the party place, so I’m sure you’ll fit right in. Some of the water is dirty, and not great for swimming, but the tour around the neighbour islands is well worth the trip. Phi Phi is gorgeous but the central part is very crowded with mostly unthinking package tourists.
Around 4,000 people are believed to have died on Phi Phi , though the numbers will never be known. It was here that three of the four Irish victims of the tsunami died .
There are a few different species of sharks which can be spotted around Koh Phi Phi . You don’t need to be afraid, there are no dangerous species of sharks around Phi Phi Islands. There is no other place in Thailand where you can spot reef- sharks just from off beach snorkeling.
The only inhabited island, Koh Phi Phi Don, is car and motorbike-free. Everyone walks or cycles and everything is a 10-minute walk away. This makes it possibly one of the safest places in Thailand. If you’re having a party on a beach, the skipper of the boat that brought you shouldn’t be drinking cold beers.
Walk – There are no taxis or buses on Ko Phi Phi , so you ‘ll be mostly walking everywhere! It’s not a huge island , so you ‘ll be okay using man power to get around .

Which Phi Phi Island ? When travelers say “ Koh Phi Phi ” they invariably mean Koh Phi Phi Don, the larger of the two well-known islands in the marine park. Koh Phi Phi Leh, the smaller island a little south, is uninhabited but can be visited on tours.
THE BEACH IS CROWDED Once you’re at Phi Phi , it’s easy to reach Maya Bay. Maya Bay has a crowd and the corals are more or less destroyed by the many boats that sail through the bay every day. But it doesn’t change the fact that it is a beautiful beach.
Bali offers more hotel choices than Phuket does. If you’re a surfer, Bali is your choice for its collection of world-class breaks. On the other hand, Phuket’s beaches are more scenic and laidback, great for those preferring island beach escapades with a mix of water sports and just lazing on the sand.
Most travellers consider November to February the best time to visit Phuket , when days are mostly sunny and dry – ideal if you’re planning to spend lots of time on the beach. The wet season runs from May to October, when the south-west monsoon brings higher levels of rainfall and humidity.
The greatest run-up height of the tsunami was measured at a hill between Lhoknga and Leupung, on the western coast of the northern tip of Sumatra, near Banda Aceh, and reached 51 m ( 167 ft ).
