Thai people , formerly known as Siamese, are the main ethnic group of Thailand . They are part of the larger Tai group of peoples living in Southeast Asia, southern China and north-east India. They speak the Thai language, which has several regional variations. Most Thai people are followers of Theravada Buddhism.
The name Siam came from a Sanskrit word, syam. A forceful nationalist and moderniser, he changed the country’s name to Thailand . The change was part of Phibun’s determination to bring his people into the modern world and at the same time to emphasise their unique identity.
Today for various reasons Thailand is divided into 6 regions, or more precisely 6 regional groups of Thai provinces. The regions are: Central Thailand , including the Thai capital of Bangkok, Eastern Thailand , Northern Thailand , Northeast (Isan), Southern Thailand and Western Thailand .
